IHOP: Day One.

IHOP is a funny place. It’s one of those places that is massive in lore and tradition; but, in person, it’s really just a tiny crack in the outskirts of a Kansas City strip mall. Easy to drive by it entirely, if you aren’t watchfully looking for it.

And yet, there is a clear weight to this place. So naturally, I’m here with big expectations! I’ll add more comments later, but please be in prayer for me and Dave as we seek after God’s heart here this week.

David Rejoices to the Lord

I waited patiently for the Lord;

And He inclined to me and heard my cry.

He brought me up out of the pit of destruction, out of the miry clay,

And He set my feet upon a rock making my footsteps firm.

He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God;

Many will see and fear

And will trust in the Lord.

David Cries Out to the Lord

12 “ Hear my prayer, O Lord, and give ear to my cry;

Do not be silent at my tears;

For I am a stranger with You,

A sojourner like all my fathers.

13 “ Turn Your gaze away from me, that I may smile again

Before I depart and am no more.”

Permalink So thankful that our God is not this selective!
Permalink Ken Medema might just be the coolest person on earth. His joyful approach in musical worship completely suffocates any disabilities that he might suffer through on a daily basis, and it’s also pretty badass that everything is improvised.

The Stones Cry Out

36 As He was going, they were spreading their coats on the road. 37 As soon as He was approaching, near the descent of the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of the disciples began to praise God joyfully with a loud voice for all the miracles which they had seen, 38 shouting:

   “BLESSED IS THE KING WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD;
Peace in heaven andglory in the highest!”

 39 Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Him, “Teacher, rebuke Your disciples.” 40 But Jesus answered, “I tell you, if these become silent, the stones will cry out!”

Humbling Truths

You know that awkward moment when you realize that a relationship with someone isn’t nearly as deep as you initially thought it to be? I wonder if God feels that way with us sometimes..

200 Years Ago: Feb. 19th

I’d like to give a big shout out to Adoniram Judson, the first Protestant missionary from North America, who set sail for Burma on this day — exactly 200 years ago. Sorta makes you think that the 19th of February is a whole lot more significant than the 14th, doesn’t it? Haha.

Judson was only 25 years old — and more surprisingly — only three years removed from becoming a Christian when he was called overseas. His legacy includes bringing 8,000 people to Christ, planting over 100 churches in Burma, as well as playing a prominent role in the creation of the American Baptist church.

One might scoff and argue that Judson’s ‘stats’ are modest in comparison to other evangelical heavyweights like William Carey or David Livingstone, but no one can ignore the spiritual precedent that Judson set for Christians in America. Since his obedience to God’s call, no other country has sent more missionaries abroad than the United States. Very cool.

Of course, Judson’s work isn’t done. There is more political and religious unrest in Burma now than we have ever seen before, and there is no doubt that the gospel message is still needed there today. Thankfully, though, there is a spiritual foundation to build upon.

I really don’t think I have to spell out what we need to do in response. If you really don’t have a clue, just turn to Matthew 28. But first, take a moment and thank God for the faithfulness of a Biblical scholar young Christian who was able to achieve great things today.

Thanks, Adoniram!

Don’t be Fooled by Makeup!

After spending the past six hours designing website graphics, posters, and logos for my church, I realized something out of my delirium: that no amount of artistic acuity or programming ability can actually replace the state of a church.

I guess it’s a lot like women’s cosmetics, really — in the sense that adding layers is merely a covering for the imperfections underneath. Haha, sorry, ladies! But unlike the permanence of facial attributes, the church is something that we can actually fix. Praise God!
